Men’s Rally and Preaching at First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS

Mid-South Men’s Rally and Preaching at First Presbyterian Church

The following is taken from a press release from Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, NC:

Dr. Michael A. Milton, President and James M. Baird Jr. Professor of Pastoral Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC, will be preaching at the Mid-South Men’s Rally at First Presbyterian Church, in Jackson, MS. on Friday January 29.

The 25th annual Men’s Rally is an opportunity for fathers and grandfathers to spend quality time with their sons and grandsons. It is a time to invite both Christian and non-Christian friends, neighbors, colleagues, and acquaintances to an uplifting gathering of men from around the state and region.

Dr. Milton will speak two times on Friday evening. His first talk, “Is There Not A Cause,” is from 1 Samuel 17:29.  He will be looking at the tragic, heroic and sinful life of David. David’s heart is shown as David, the king-to-be, cries out to God to live for a cause that is greater than himself. Men need a cause. Our hearts cry out for meaning and for fulfillment. Dr. Milton will seek, using God’s Word, to answer the question: “What is my cause in life?”

His second talk, “Oh My Son!” is from 2 Samuel 18:33, 23:5 and John 16:33. The cry of the heart of the man of God is not only a cry for a cause, but it is also a cry of pain and a cry of hope in the midst of pain. The hope comes from the Promise of new life in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This was what David looked to, this is what we look to as well.
The sermon for the Sunday worship services is: “Quit Ye Like Men” A Call to Biblical Manhood I Corinthians 16:13,14 and 1 Peter 2:9-12, 3:7. The sermon title is taken from the KJV of 1 Cor. 16:13: Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. The Bible says a great deal about the subject of manhood. In 1 Cor. 16, Paul ends his letter to the Corinthians by calling the leaders to take a courageous stand for Christ against the many devices of Satan which have come into that church.  In the second reading, Peter encourages men to fulfill their calling as husbands before a watching world. In both of these passages, God speaks to men today.
